Q. What does a chiropractor do?

The brain is connected by nerves to every part of body, and good health depends on that connection.

Since spinal bones can “subluxate” or misalign; they can irritate the nerves and diminish health. Good and conservative chiropractors adjust the spine to restore its alignment contributing to better health throughout the body.

Patients almost always experience dramatic relief from the pain often associated with these subluxations, but the benefit is actually widespread and improves all aspects of health.

Q. But I thought chiropractors only treat for headaches, back pain, etc.?

Certainly many people do go to chiropractors for relief from these conditions, and almost all receive remarkable results, even when other methods have failed. However, regularly-scheduled conservative spinal care to ensure a healthy spine is beneficial.

An analogy to dentistry would be helpful here. A new patient at a dentist’s office might need extensive care — cavities filled, root canals, etc. Once the intensive care was complete, the dentist would schedule check-ups to look for and correct small problems before they became worse. Similarly, a chiropractor would recommend occasional visits to check the spine and give adjustments as necessary, sometimes before symptoms appear. We will also provide you with recommendations to avoid recurring problems and reduce the need for too many adjustments.

Q. Will I know if my spine needs an adjustment?

Sometimes. You may occasionally feel the muscle spasm, stiffness, inflammation and other signs commonly associated with a misaligned or subluxated spine. However, a person should be checked regularly for spinal problems even before they become noticeable.

Q. Will I be adjusted at every visit?

No. That is a great question, and one of the most important aspects of good chiropractic care! Simply, you will not need to be adjusted at every visit. Many times, your spine will have “held” its alignment, and not need to be adjusted. Think about this. Chiropractors adjust (re-align) the spine to relieve irritation from the spinal cord and nerves — if no misalignments exist, then no adjustment is needed! When you receive an examination, but no adjustment, there is no fee charged, and you leave knowing that your spine is maintaining its correction.

Q. Did you say I wouldn’t be charged a fee if I do not need an adjustment?

Yes, and it’s much more than a financial decision – it’s a moral and ethical decision. You are only charged a fee when the examination indicates that the spine is out of alignment (“subluxated”) and needs to be adjusted. This keeps care affordable, and allows our patients to make conservative chiropractic care part of their lifestyle.

Q. I saw your display of SEMG findings. What is an SEMG?

A surface electromyograph (SEMG) measures activity of the spinal muscles in a similar way that a cardiologist would measure heart muscle activity with an electrocardiograph (ECG). I analyze the patterns of spinal muscle activity to help identify the subluxated areas of the spine.

We are particularly proud of the extensive research we have conducted on SEMG analysis. Not only do we use the SEMG analysis to help our patients, we have also consulted on cases from New York and Pennsylvania. Currently, we are expanding our research and look forward to publication in professional journals and presentations at one of our annual conferences.

Q. Sometimes I hear disturbing stories about chiropractors. Why is that?

As in every profession, almost all practitioners are ethical men and women trying to help their patients through dedicated, responsible care. We’ve all heard stories of physicians who malpractice, attorneys who act unethically, and likewise chiropractors who abuse the system of healthcare.
In all cases and all professions, these are the unfortunate exceptions.
Our patients’ ages have ranged from 8 days to 97 years, with care individually suited for safety, comfort and effectiveness.
